Engineering surveys

Survey works precede the design of a fibre-optic line and include a field visit of geodetic engineers to the route, topographic survey, detection of existing utilities and engineering-geological investigation.

Survey works precede the design of a fibre-optic cable line and involve a field visit of geodetic engineers to the cable-laying route. The quality of the survey works subsequently determines the quality of the detailed design and prevents many problems during the installation of the fibre-optic line. We therefore pay great attention to this type of work.

The purpose of the survey works is to perform a topographic survey of the terrain within the corridor of the planned route. Special attention is paid to surveying the points where the planned fibre-optic cable crosses engineering utilities, locating existing pipelines, communication cable lines, power supply lines and other utilities, determining their actual position and depth, as well as roads, railways and water crossings.

The geodetic engineers of the Project Centre are equipped with modern geodetic equipment: electronic total stations made by Leica, the G850 geodetic satellite system, an echo-sounder navigator for measuring the depth of water crossings, electronic rangefinders, mobile radio stations, and laptops with specialised software.

The Project Centre includes an engineering-geological survey unit. Specialists of this unit provide design engineers with information on soil categories along the planned fibre-optic route. This information is critical for process engineers when selecting work methods and construction equipment for installation works.

The engineering-geological survey unit is staffed with highly qualified specialists with extensive experience. They have at their disposal a mobile drilling rig, a soil-science laboratory for determining the physical and chemical properties of soil samples, and computer equipment.
